Xenolith(ZEE-no-lith)

Quick Detail: A fragment of rock trapped inside a different rock.

Definition: A xenolith forms when a piece of surrounding rock becomes enclosed within cooling magma, preserving a small piece of another world inside stone. The contrast between the host and the fragment can reveal clues about deep geological history. Such inclusions often look like foreign islands frozen in place. They show how separate layers of the earth briefly met and fused. The word embodies the idea of the strange held within the familiar.
