Bogeyman

Quick Detail: Bogeyman is a shadowy figure from folklore used to frighten or warn, often imagined lurking in dark places.

Definition: The bogeyman is a universal figure in folklore—a lurking presence said to hide under beds, behind doors, or in dark corners. Stories about the bogeyman have appeared in many cultures, each giving the figure its own name, form, and habits. Despite the differences, the role is usually the same: a warning meant to keep children cautious and close to safety. The creature is rarely described in detail, allowing imagination to supply the fear. Because of this, the bogeyman often feels less like a single monster and more like the shape of whatever frightens us most in the dark.
